One of our key challenges in achieving the state-wide targets on the coast is to integrate land-use planning with natural resource management.

 NRC's role

The State Environmental Planning Policy No 71 - Coastal Protection (SEPP 71) requires the Minister for Planning (the Minister) to consult with the NRC on the need for master plans for proposed coastal developments and on draft master plans.

Master plan is a document consisting of written information, maps and diagrams that outlines proposals for development of the land to which the master plan applies. Master plans are required before certain development consents can be granted.

 Progress so far

The NRC receives requests from the Department of Planning, acting on behalf of the Minister, and provides advice to the Department on whether to waive the requirement for a master plan and on draft master plans.

In April 2007, the NRC provided a periodic progress report to the Minister, summarising its recommendations on SEPP 71 matters since November 2006.
