A new resource to navigate an uncertain future for our forests and woodlands
24-Dec-2025
Research suggests our forests and woodlands are entering a period of ecological change, driven primarily by the impacts of climate change. Forest and land managers will need to reconsider existing approaches and assumptions in the light of new evidence and emerging risks.
A new guide - Navigating Forest Dieback and Climate Succession - is now available to support forest managers, planners and policy practitioners respond to climate-induced dieback and ecological change.
The guide provides a plain-English overview of dieback and climate succession, reviews the evolving context for forest management, and introduce adaptive planning approaches suited to the realities of climate-driven change. Throughout, the emphasis is on practical, evidence-based strategies that can be tailored to diverse management contexts.
This guide is the culmination of a six-year research program investigating the causes of tree dieback overseen by the Commission with support from the NSW Environmental Trust.
