Annual checks and five-yearly assessments

The PNF codes of practice released in May 2022 introduced a new requirement for an annual check of the evidence base. Working with the Forest Monitoring Steering Committee, we undertake these annual checks to ensure the private native forestry evidence base is up to date.

Our approach was endorsed by the Committee in May 2023. We look at:

  • emerging evidence around private native forestry, including relevant mapping and evidence from monitoring, evaluation and research
  • opportunities for improving the PNF MER Framework, including changes to monitoring and evaluation priorities and data collection.

Results from the annual checks are published in the PNF monitoring program annual progress report.

The PNF codes also require the Committee to formally assess the data and evidence every five years with the first assessment due in 2027. The Committee will advise relevant Ministers whether there is sufficient evidence to warrant a review of the codes. Where emerging evidence from the annual checks indicates there may be opportunities to improve the PNF codes or their implementation, this evidence will be flagged for consideration as part of the five-year assessment process.

Annual progress reports

We, on behalf of the Committee, produce annual progress reports for the PNF monitoring program. The program reports annually to the NSW Government, Local Land Services, the Environment Protection Authority and the Department of Planning and Environment.

We have released the first annual report for this program, outlining program achievements and progress for 2022-23.
