Evidence base continues to build for private native forestry

31-Jul-2025

Landholder reporting on harvest volumes and area continues, and Local Land Services reporting indicates levels of private native forestry approvals remain high. As part of ongoing fauna monitoring, ecologists at the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development have analysed acoustic monitoring data collected between 2019 to 2023 for 10 different species including the koala. Results indicate all 10 species have persisted in private native forests following the 2019-20 fires, including some sites where harvesting has also occurred. Camera trap monitoring has identified 58 species including native and invasives, with the common brushtail possum and red necked wallaby amongst those with highest detections.
